It’s the first Monday of May and we just can’t keep calm because it’s Met Gala Day. Met Gala, formally known as Costume Institute Gala is an annual fundraiser for the benefit of the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Costume Institute in New York City. Renowned names from the global fashion sphere make a statement by appearing each year, under the guidance of a theme for the Met Ball.
Celebrating this year, the theme for Met Gala is Camp: Notes on Fashion. Confusing as the theme may sound, it simply stands for an irony. Camp here means an exaggerated version of what is natural, artificially presenting the authentic. It refers to the early ’60s when women and men would wear outfits that exaggerated and at the same time distorted their body shapes. They would wear elaborate head gears and ornamentation to merge the authentic with the artificial. That is the theme of the ball this year.
